US Diplomats Explore Economic Solutions with Putin to Resolve Ukraine Conflict

In an effort to rejuvenate stalled peace negotiations, U.S. peace envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner engaged in extensive talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. The marathon discussions, lasting over three hours, are part of Washington’s renewed push to seek a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. According to the White House, the talks concentrated on concrete plans for advancing toward a potential peace settlement, with more detailed information anticipated in the coming weeks. Following their discussions in Moscow, Witkoff and Kushner are scheduled to proceed to Kyiv to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Kremlin representatives mentioned that the dialogue covered various proposals for a possible resolution, yet stopped short of indicating any significant breakthrough. Putin reiterated Moscow’s stance, emphasizing the need to address the underlying causes of the conflict while claiming that Russia is making headway on the battlefield. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy linked recent Russian strikes on Kyiv and Boryspil International Airport to the U.S. negotiators’ arrival, asserting that Ukraine would adapt its military strategy in response to Russian airspace violations.

The push for renewed negotiations comes after previous peace efforts failed to yield a viable agreement. Ending the war in Ukraine has been a key foreign policy objective for President Donald Trump, who recently announced that Witkoff and Kushner were presenting a new proposal aimed at resolving the conflict. Despite these efforts, significant disparities persist between Moscow and Kyiv. Russia’s demands for control over certain territories and its opposition to Ukraine joining NATO remain contentious points, while Ukraine has firmly rejected these conditions.

The conflict has escalated in recent weeks, marked by an uptick in long-range drone and missile attacks from both sides. Russian forces have targeted Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, whereas Ukraine has launched strikes on Russian military installations, energy infrastructure, and oil refineries to undermine Moscow’s war efforts. This latest diplomatic endeavor by Washington occurs amid ongoing hostilities along the approximately 1,250-kilometer frontline, as the U.S. attempts to reconcile the wide gaps between the two nations.
