This legislation was crucial for funding healthcare and monitoring services for those who were exposed to hazardous conditions at Ground Zero. During discussions on the bill, Rogers expressed concerns that it could jeopardize the nation’s financial stability. Despite his opposition, the act successfully passed in the House with broad support, although many Republicans opposed it.
Adding to the criticism, Rogers also voted against additional funding measures in 2002 that aimed to address the financial ramifications of 9/11 on New York schools, which included support for veterans’ healthcare and first responders. Over the years, Rogers opposed several other initiatives related to funding, pensions, and benefits for first responders, drawing ire from advocates like John Feal, a 9/11 responder. Feal, who champions healthcare benefits for responders, accused Rogers of betrayal, recalling discussions he had with Rogers about the Zadroga legislation during its congressional consideration.
Further controversy surrounds Rogers’ claims in a campaign email where he stated he had personally seen Osama bin Laden’s body following the U.S. raid that led to bin Laden’s death in Pakistan. Rogers was neither present in Pakistan during the operation nor was he in the White House Situation Room where U.S. officials observed the mission unfold.
