A federal judge has mandated that the Trump administration disclose the origins of a proposed $1.8 billion fund devised to compensate individuals who allege they were victims of political prosecution. This directive was issued by U.S. Magistrate Judge Ivan Davis amid a lawsuit contesting the legitimacy of the fund. The legal challenge is spearheaded by Democracy Forward, representing several plaintiffs, including a former federal prosecutor and a college professor who was acquitted of charges related to a protest opposing an immigration raid.
Last month, the Justice Department announced that the proposed fund had been scrapped. Todd Blanche, a former Justice Department official, confirmed that the initiative had stalled before it could be operational. The fund was initially conceptualized as part of a settlement involving President Donald Trump and the Internal Revenue Service. Critics of the initiative contended that it might have extended compensation to individuals prosecuted in connection with the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, as well as others.
Despite the administration’s decision to abandon the project, the proposed fund encountered resistance from lawmakers across the political spectrum, including Republican senators. There were concerns about whether the program could be resurrected in the future. Meanwhile, a federal judge had previously determined in July that Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS lacked substantive legal grounds and was merely a tool used to establish the settlement that led to the fund’s framework.
President Trump has voiced his disappointment over the discontinuation of the fund, asserting that he believed some people had been treated unjustly. The recent court order is expected to shed light on how the proposed fund was structured and whether there are any ongoing plans to pursue compensation through alternative means.
