While the bowling of Keshav Maharaj rightly earned plaudits, it was South Africa’s superior batting depth that ultimately proved the difference in their 98-run victory over Australia. The ability to post a commanding total of 8-296 set the game up perfectly.
From the 92-run opening stand to the valuable half-centuries from Aiden Markram (82) and Temba Bavuma (65), the Proteas’ top order fired. But critically, even after losing wickets, the runs continued to flow, culminating in Wiaan Mulder’s explosive unbeaten 31.
This contrasts sharply with Australia’s batting effort. Once the top order was breached, there was no one to prop up the innings. The middle order contributed next to nothing, leaving Mitch Marsh (88) to fight a battle he could not win.
The final total of 198 was a reflection of this lack of depth. South Africa’s ability to get contributions from multiple players down the order gave their bowlers the luxury of a large total to defend, a luxury Australia simply did not have.
